Why Is One Cooling Tower Cell Cooling Worse Than the Others?

When several cooling tower cells operate together, one cell may sometimes produce noticeably warmer outlet water than the others. This does not always mean that the cooling tower fill in that cell has failed.

Start With the Difference Between Cells

Compare the water flow, inlet water temperature, outlet water temperature, airflow, and water distribution of the affected cell with a normally operating cell. A clear difference can help narrow down the cause much faster.

Check Water Distribution

A partially blocked nozzle, uneven distribution, or incorrect water flow can cause one section of the cooling tower fill to receive less water than the other cells.

Look for dry areas, abnormal water coverage, or noticeably different flow patterns before replacing the fill.

Check the Fill Condition

If water distribution is normal, inspect the fill for deformation, fouling, displacement, or damaged sections. A local problem inside the fill can reduce the effective air-water contact area and make one cell perform differently from the others.

Do Not Ignore Airflow Differences

Fan condition, air inlet obstruction, and airflow imbalance can also cause different cooling performance between cells. The fill should therefore be evaluated together with the surrounding airflow conditions.

When Should the Fill Be Replaced?

If the affected cell has permanently damaged or deformed fill while the water and airflow systems are operating normally, replacement may be the practical solution.
