A sudden increase in cooling tower approach is a useful warning that the tower is no longer reaching the same cooling condition as before. The cause may be related to water, airflow, operating conditions, or the fill section.

What Does a Higher Approach Mean?

Approach is the difference between the leaving water temperature and the entering air wet-bulb temperature. When this value increases compared with the normal operating baseline, the cooling tower is having more difficulty bringing the water temperature down.

Check Operating Conditions First

Before inspecting the fill, compare the current heat load, circulating water flow, fan operation, and wet-bulb temperature with normal conditions. A change in any of these factors can affect the tower's cooling performance.

Inspect the Cooling Tower Fill

If the operating conditions have not changed significantly, inspect the cooling tower fill for fouling, deformation, scaling, or restricted passages.

Even when the fill still looks acceptable from the outside, deposits or local deformation can change water and airflow paths inside the fill.

Look for a Change From the Normal Baseline

Rather than judging the fill only by its appearance, compare current approach, water temperatures, flow rate, and airflow with historical operating data. This makes it easier to determine whether the deterioration is gradual or associated with a specific operating event.

Find the Cause Before Replacing Fill

A higher approach does not automatically mean that the fill needs replacement. The correct solution depends on the reason for the performance change.
